REVIEW - THE CHRISTIANS
Jazz Café

THE Jazz Café, a blissful bubble of mellow escapism, seemed an incongruous setting to mention BNP “bastards”.
But Garry Christian’s understated, whispered attack, lamenting the far-right party’s recent election win in his native North-west, added to the evening’s enjoyable participation ethos – the man behind the big shades later employing his willing audience for a gospel-style “nah nah nah” sing-along on The Bottle.
Eschewing 80s synth effects, the band fused their own hits with lo-fi soul classic covers and then, following the brief political spot, a superb version of the Beatles’ Here Comes The Sun.
Born Again, Hooverville, and Ideal World all emanated an uplifting effervescence, while Words was predictably moving backed by a grand piano.
