Lucy gives chamber music a much-needed Legg up!

PREVIEW: MORPHOSEN
St Cyprian's

A NEW chamber ensemble, Morphosen is to have its debut concert on Monday evening at St Cyprian’s Church, near to Baker Street.

The ensemble is called Morphosen to reflect the ability of its pool of musicians to “morph” into any combination from two to six musicians.
“Chamber music tends to be dominated by the same old formats of string and wind pieces,” says soprano Lucy Legg, 39, a founder-member of the ensemble now living in the Brecknock, Tufnell Park. “We felt we could do something different by being much more flexible.
“At the concert, for instance, there’s a piece for flute, alto sax and piano; another for flute and cello; and still another for voice, clarinet and piano.
“And a new work by Tim Ewers for voice, flute, clarinet, horn, cello and piano is going to be given its world premiere.”
Born and brought up in Inverness Street, Camden Town, Lucy Legg developed her love for music at Camden School for Girls and the ILEA Centre for
Young Musicians in Pimlico.
After graduating, she taught music for a while before deciding to become a professional musician six years ago.
She helped to found Morphosen with two friends she met at the ILEA Centre for Young Musicians – flautist Rowland Sutherland and French horn player Gavin Edwards.
“The breadth of opportunities offered by the ILEA music centre simply cannot be matched by the
fragmented borough-by-borough approach of today as there’s just not enough money,” says Ms Legg.
“Chamber music is the element that’s been sacrificed and that’s why we try to encourage young people to explore chamber music. So we’re offering free entry to adults accompanying under-14s.”
Morphosen perform on Monday June 22 at St Cyprian’s, Glentworth Street, NW1. 020 7485 4071. 7.30 pm, from £14 (£12 concessions).
