Florence, Ronson set to play Proud

IT looks like a dazzling month at Proud, with visits from Britpack darling Mark Ronson, glitzy macabre Florence and the Machine, the notorious Dirty Pretty Things, and the drumming phenomenon that is Joji Hirota.
Our beloved Florence and the Machine play tonight (Thursday). Fronted by the unique Florence Welch, a self-described “choir girl gone horribly, desperately wrong”, the group won the Critics’ Choice Award at the Brits. At once indie-edgy yet delicate, bizarre and beautiful, a night spent with Florence should be fascinating and memorable.
Younger than Yesterday on Sunday (May 10) features Didz Hammond and Anthony Rossomondo of Dirty Pretty Things, leading a night of rock collaborations with secret appearances from some big names.
On Wednesday (May 13) Mark Ronson graces the stage for Trekstock, a one-off gig for the Teenage Cancer Trust. . Ronson will be taking time out from producing Duran Duran’s much-hyped comeback album to appear, and his set will also feature Dan Greenpeace and some very special guests.
The Bank Holiday weekend sounds like it could get messy, as Proud stays open until 4am. Sunday (May 24) is the night worth banking on with Pete and the Pirates serving up an eclectic brand of indie rock, described by NME as “perfect pop without pretence”. The boys will be joined by DJ sets from Does it Offend you Yeah? and Bioux.
Wind down the weekend on May 25 with a 75-minute set by Japanese percussionist Joji Hirota and the Taiko Drummers. The non-stop concert will be filmed as part of a feature documentary. The Taiko drumming is punctuated by Hirota’s flutes and vocals, resulting in a genre that is both stunning and haunting. Best of all – this one is free.
