Viola premiere

PREVIEW: HAMPSTEAD AND HIGHGATE FINALE
Hampstead Parish Church

THE world premiere of a new viola concerto by Highgate composer Paul Patterson is to be performed on Wednesday at Hampstead Parish Church in the final concert of this year’s Hampstead & Highgate Springfest.
Sarah-Jane Bradley, widely regarded as one of the country’s foremost viola players, will be taking on the work with the Springfest Orchestra conducted by George Vass.
The work is the third concerto for a string instrument by Paul Patterson, others being for violin and cello.
If the previous works are anything to go by, his new composition will provide Sarah-Jane’s viola with every opportunity to shine.
More, the concerto may well demonstrate that the viola does not deserve its reputation as an introverted, neglected instrument, a mere wall-flower at the string ball.
Other works at the concert include Richard Rodney Bennett’s delightful Seven Country Dances played by Amy Dickson, the highly regarded soprano saxophonist, and the orchestra.
