THE Library plays host to a new alternative acoustic night Fahrenheit 451 on Monday, featuring some of the brightest, unsigned talent London has to offer.
Inspired by Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel of the same name – which depicts the burning of books and the repression of arts and culture – the night showcases some of London’s most innovative acts. And this trendy yet unassuming Islington bar, which has pitched itself as a haven for groundbreaking musicians, provides the perfect setting.
Fahrenheit’s third outing sees its best line-up yet. The night is headlined by critically acclaimed psychedelic indie/folk act Jack Cheshire, recently described by the Sunday Telegraph as a “hugely beguiling talent in urgent need of discovery”.
Cheshire is supported by folksinger/songwriter Russell Joslin. With his abrasive style and haunting vocals, Joslin has been described as one of the most original songwriters on the London scene. Joslin said: “Angel has always had a buzz to it and in terms of music it has a fair amount of history with the Hope & Anchor and there’s always good stuff going down at the Old Queen’s Head.
“But at the moment some new nights are popping up in the area. Samir [Eskanda, organiser of Fahrenheit 451] turned an acoustic night at Cocomo on Old Street into something really special and his nights always seem to go from strength to strength.”
Other performers on the night include the Lofty Heights and Robin Grey. Brainchild of San Franciscan Greg Griffin, the Lofty Heights combine the laid-back sounds of his native state with the traditional folk-song of the East End in a mesmerising menagerie of sound, while the poetic mastery of Grey anti-folk tales is a joy to behold.
With such an eclectic line-up, Fahrenheit 451 is an antidote to the mundane and predictable.
