H.O.O.D. FELLAZ: So Far So Hood

THIS 11-strong crew has successfully merged UK rap with the stronger, darker backing tracks more common with hip-hop from across the Atlantic – and are all the better for it.
In one track, they tell us “Hip-hop ain’t dead, it fled to the UK,” and in here it’s true.
The heavy bass lines and emotive string samples add some weight as they talk of council estates, life in Camden, and tell one intriguing tale from the point of view of a wino outside Chalk Farm Tube. The hooks are catchy and even non-rap fans will find themselves unconsciously humming the tunes after one listen.
With so many minds contributing, H.O.O.D.FELLAZ – who are mainly from Camden and Islington and all aged between 18 and 24 – have produced a varied album, which keeps the attention. Watch out for Queen’s Crescent in their MySpace video.
