JUST when you thought it was safe to hibernate for January, the music industry plans another party.
This month we’ve got the Brit awards launch at the Roundhouse, where Florence and the Machine, Gabriela Cilmi and Scouting for Girls will be playing.
Then on to the NME awards tour which is all over the country, with a bunch of shows in London.
And don’t forget Astoria’s massive farewell party on January 15. Manumission is making a special appearance as are Kasabian and The Who.
n My favourite little Scotsman Tommy Reilly played at Proud on Wednesday – he’s made it through to Channel 4’s Orange Unsigned Act semifinals on Sunday – so good luck to him, though I’m warming to the other Scottish contenders and the only band left in the competition, Hip Parade.
n I can’t believe Fleet Foxes, who play the Roundhouse next month, have just won an award for their album artwork.
Their self-titled album features a depressing painting by Dutch artist Pieter Bruegel – Netherlandish Proverbs – which, although clever and apt for the band’s folky style, is just unpleasant to look at.
I hate walking past the poster at Chalk Farm Tube – I’m just glad their music is better than their taste in art.
n I’ve heard a huge act will be playing the Camden Crawl this year but have been sworn to secrecy and I’ve been thinking how I can prove Grooves is first with the news even when we can’t print it.
So I’ve decided to post the name to myself and keep it in a sealed envelope until the line-up’s been announced – I may be wrong anyway.
