Junkets/Sixes & Sevens

LIKE so many bands before them, this Camden three-piece first formed over a hazy few pints in The Good Mixer – an early stomping ground for likes of Blur, Oasis, Elastica and Supergrass.
During their two-year existence The Stayaways have steadily gathered a loyal fanbase who follow them wherever they go, which is usually within the confines of Camden.
Their two-track EP – featuring songs Junkets and Sixes & Sevens – was released at the Purple Turtle a couple of weeks ago and signals a new direction for the band, who are huge Gang of Four fans.
Lead singer Liam Devall said: “Our aim is to create a newer sound with a pounding backbeat, heavy bass sound and with melody being the focus on the top.”
The intro for Junkets has a way of drawing in the listener, as it develops into something strangely familiar – reminiscent of a wave of late 1990s indie bands, in a good way.
The gentle Sixes & Sevens is a little more current but would still be at home in the scene a decade ago.
Reviving the sounds of the 1980s is all the rage right now so this makes a refreshing change. The EP is available to download now. They begin a national tour early next year so take advantage of the chance to see them while they’re still here. They play the Dublin Castle’s Rock’n’Roll Cabaret All Day Xmas Shindig on Sunday.
Also on the bill are Mama Coco, Cherry Brakewells, Glass Shark, Joanna And The Wolf and Kindle. Look out for the drunken Santa and burlesque dancers.
If you can’t make it, you can catch them headlining Camden Barfly on Friday, January 9.
