The Review - MUSIC - grooves with ROISIN GADELRAB
Published: 20 November 2008

Grooves

“THERE’S too much weak sh** out there” – not my words, but those of Wu Tang founder rapper GZA at the Electric Ballroom last week.
He was talking about bad rap. Is he right? Can British rap contend with the low-riding, slow, dark hip-hop style of the Wu? When I spoke to Lowkey a few weeks ago he said he wasn’t concerned with competing with US rap – the Britpack have their own style.
I first heard the Wu Tang Clan when my skateboarding friends made me watch Kung Fu classic, Mystery of Chessboxing. All I remember was some crazy master-pupil chopstick scene, but it did make me pay more attention to the Wu Tang’s music. I don’t know where GZA got his name, but it was good to hear some familiar tunes, including a nod to deceased cousin and compadre Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Shimmy Shimmy Ya and Grandmaster Flash’s The Message.

• Camden Crawl tickets went on sale on Monday. The names will be announced much later on, but keep a space in your diary for April 24-25.

• Next Wednesday (November 26) at Proud is Intel Studio’s search for unsigned bands final. Alphabeat will be there and I’m hoping they play the irritating-yet-want-to-hear-more Boyfriend.
