The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS
Published: 24 July 2008

FAREWELL pop pickers... This is my last week on Grooves, and hasn’t it been fun?
Seeing as it’s the last time I’ll get to write this, I thought I’d run down the best, and worst, moments of my three years on north London’s music beat.

1. Best Gig – Amy Winehouse, Dublin Castle, April 2007:
It was a shiny moment in Camden’s musical history. Having watched Miss Winehouse launch Back to Black to a bored audience six months earlier at Bar Solo, Camden’s golden girl returned triumphant to every muso’s venue of choice, the Dublin Castle. Magical.
2. Best Interview – Patti Smith, Nashville, October 2007:
I didn’t really know anything about Patti Smith before I sat down with her on the grounds of the Jack Daniel’s distillery last year. But how the grande dame of the New York music scene wowed me! In the broadest ranging interview I’ve ever been involved in, Smith moved from false teeth to president Bush without effort. It made me realise how vacuous the average celebrity really is. Charming, intelligent, educational. Changed my life.
3. Worst Gig – Some metal band, Bull and Gate, October 2005:
I don’t know what possessed me. I was new to the job, and perhaps over keen. I was asked to go along, and like an enthusiastic puppy, agreed – only to have my eardrums assaulted. I think at one stage the venue got so smoky I could have actually been in Hell.
4. Worst interview – Ray Manzarek (The Doors), by phone, December 2006:
This interview was done to promote Ray Manzarek’s gig – as member of new look Doors band Riders of the Storm – at the Roundhouse. His opening gambit was “I’m a rockstar”, before saying “Oh, you want memories,” in a surly voice. He went on to hang up on me. The rudest, most self-important man I’ve ever had the displeasure of speaking to.
And that’s the lot. Goodbye bands – I’ll miss you!
