PREVIEW:KENWOOD HOUSE
PICNIC CONCERTS
Kenwood House

THE summer festival schedule has dealt me a cruel blow.
Just when I thought I was finally in the right place at the right time to see one of my idols – Brian Wilson – I double-checked the dates only to realise that on the night he’s performing on my doorstep I’ll be many miles away, probably trying to shoo a drug-crazed hippy out of my tent in a field in Worthy Farm.
Yes, I’m going to Glastonbury – for reasons that are harder to grasp with every shower of rain I watch with a growing sense of muddy doom.
But as the start of the Kenwood House Picnic Concert series draws ever closer, there’s plenty of reasons to get excited about the rest of the line-up, and even more reason to secure your tickets before they inevitably sell out.
Rufus Wainwright – one of the few singer-songwriters who doesn’t poison you with saccharine and make you want to eat your own knees – gives a rare solo performance on July 5, while Omar Portuondo, star of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club, takes the stage the week after the Kenwood Summer Prom (July 7).
Later in the season Michael Ball will temporarily hang up his Hairspray dress for an evening of West End songs and arias with Lesley Garrett.
And if the loveable Irish curmudgeon that is Van Morrison isn’t your ideal soundtrack for a moondance, the series wraps up with operatic superstar Katherine Jenkins headlining the Last Night of the Kenwood Proms (August 23).
So, something for everyone then.
Just spare a thought for me when Wilson strikes up Wouldn’t It Be Nice as the sun starts to set – I’ll probably be knee-deep in Glasto hell, with two more days to go...
