Paul Silverthorne
Camden classical music | Preview of New Professionals Orchestra | Hampstead Parish Church

PREVIEW:NEW PROFESSIONALS ORCHESTRA
Hampstead Parish Church

CONTINUING their highly successful series of concerts that none but a deaf cultural Phillistine with a toothache could fail to enjoy (and wish occurred with greater frequency), the New Professionals Orchestra return to Hampstead on Saturday with works by Schumann, Beethoven and a European premiere by Gabriela Lena Frank under their very talented oxters.
Principal viola of the London Symphony Orchestra and London Sinfonietta, Paul Silverthorne takes on soloist duties for the evening.
One of the UK’s foremost viola players, Silverthorne appears regularly as a soloist with major orchestras around the world, and his appearance at Hampstead Parish Church represents a unique opportunity to experience immense talent at close quarters.
Nestled in the programme between Schumann’s Overture, Scherzo and Finale and Beethoven’s Symphony No 5 is Frank’s La Llorona.
Described by the composer as a “tone poem for viola and orchestra”, La Llorona is inspired by Latin American myths which tell of a female spirit – known as la llorona, or “crying woman” – which are said to wander the riverbanks where their violent deaths take place.
This somewhat grim premise shouldn’t put you off, however, as stateside newspapers were scrambling to describe Frank’s dark concerto as a modern masterpiece when it premiered there early last year.
Comprising distinguished young professional musicians, many of whom are at the start of their careers, the New Professional Orchestra have quickly risen to prominence and received critical acclaim for their innovative programming – under the baton of musical director Rebecca Miller – and dynamic musicianship.
In its eight years, the orchestra has appeared frequently at the Southbank Centre, including two appearances at the FRESH series.

The New Professionals Series continues on Saturday June 7 at 3.30pm in Hampstead Parish Church, Church Row, Hampstead. You can meet composer Gabriela Lena Frank at the same venue at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £12-£15; £8 (students and under-18s); under-15s attend free of charge when accompanied by a parent or guardian (one per paying adult).
