The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS

Camden music review| grooves | Walk of Fame | Coachella Music Festival | NME Awards | Lee Bennett

Club owner Lee Bennett is the man behind the Walk of Fame, an international campaign to bring star-studded pavements to Camden Town in celebration of its musical heritage. Last month he went to Hollywood to discuss the project. Here is an extract from his diary.

THIS is the story of a Camden boy en route to La La land via the Coachella music festival and the first annual NME awards, which I had been invited to. Apart from catching Jane’s Addiction I also saw Carbon Silicon, The Clash’s Mick Jones’s new band. Jones has agreed to be on the Walk of Fame committee.
Other guests that night in the 200-strong crowd were Sienna Miller, Kelly Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Agnes Deyn and Paul Oakenfold to name a few.
The journey to Coachella should only be experienced in a convertible. It is an amazing drive through the Californian desert.
Prince closed the festival on Saturday night, but because I opted to watch from the VIP area – bumping into Baywatch’s David Hasselhoff – I didn’t get the full-on Prince showboating. Shame.
Sunday. As the sun set over the desert I had no idea that I was to witness one of the greatest shows I think I’ll ever see – Roger Waters playing The Dark Side of the Moon, with snippets of The Wall. It was incredible. I felt proud to be a Brit again.
The next day I headed back to Hollywood for a film premiere, joining the likes of Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton on the red carpet.
Everybody was cheering me and asking for pictures, although I later found out these are professional cheerers paid by a union $100 each to cheer anybody. Oh well!
Later I got Paris Hilton, who I know through her boyfriend, to call my son and wish him well on his first date – he was chuffed.
My last engagement was meeting with the Hollywood Walk of Fame people to finalise our agreement to twin Camden and Hollywood. All went great. The fact Amy Winehouse won those Grammys has really helped, so thank you for that Amy.
