BRING on the rain, throw in some lightning, let the thunder roll – you won’t need wellies for Bestival’s reunion tour, which blows into Koko on Saturday night.
For those who missed out on tickets to the Isle of Wight’s second-most-famous festival – that’s the one which didn’t host Jimi Hendrix days before he slipped over to the other world – Koko is offering a taster menu of everything you need to recreate the atmosphere.
Delightful rappers The Sugarhill Gang – a little older and with one original member still standing – will preside over a line-up of eclectic acts with their old skool hip-hop while the magnificent “haunting” Florence and the Machine, the next big thing on the London scene, adds a touch of powerful blues/folk.
You wouldn’t normally expect Sugarhill’s ageing rap heavyweights to be found within 100 miles of a knitting tent but that’s what Bestival is all about.
Koko will be crammed with novelty attractions – lost and found giant Scrabble, spoken word shenanigans and teepees – designed to distract from the fact that the former music hall is a far cry from Bestival’s normal home in the leafy fields of the Isle of Wight.
Providing a quirky soundtrack to this madness will be Django Spears, who promise a curious rehash of classic dance tracks from the likes of 2 Unlimited and Whigfield.
Also on the bill are Rob da Bank, Sombrero Sound System, who will be spinning a bland of party favourites, German electro maestro Ulrich Schnauss, The Cuban Brothers and Das Pop.
