The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS
Published: 1 May 2008

Grooves

I’VE got a confession to make. Sometimes bands ask me to listen to their stuff. I put them off, I ignore the phone, I lie. Anything, but listen to their record.
One band I’ve never done that with is The Crimea. Their music is a tapestry of adolescent school holidays mixed with a really good night out, and a bit of heartbreak thrown in for good measure.
I’ve said it before, but Davey MacManus is one of the nicest guys working in the toothy music biz. Considering all the highs and lows he’s had – from being flown to LA to meet the head honchos at Warner to sweeping the streets – he’s surely had it harder than the average hopeful.
But the Irish lad, now a Camden Town re-incarnate, hasn’t let it get to him. He’s still plugging away. His last album, The Secrets of the Witching Hour, was masterful. His new one, Kiss Chase to the Death (good name!) which he wrote in a three month daze, will blow it out of the water.
And you’ve got to hand it to the man. He’s willing to suffer for his art – on the day we meet he’s been pushed into the Camden Lock canal three times for a music video. “God knows what I might have picked up,” he says pluckily.
Even if you’ve got something better to do (friend’s birthday, finishing your revision, dining the office temp), leave it. Go see Davey and The Crimea at their residency, Starship Enterprise, at the Enterprise. Go!
