Reggae legend still Skylarking

PREVIEW: HORACE ANDY

Jazz Café

IT would be acceptable to the punters if Horace Andy turned up to his gig at the Jazz Café on April 10 and walloped through his extensive back catalogue of hits.
After all, it has been around 40 years since he joined the famous Jamaican record producer Coxone Dodd and his Studio One and in that time he has produced and recorded some of the most memorable reggae records ever released.
But Andy’s career has been innovative, and you can expect a taste of the many different styles he has dabbled in.
Having made his name with his 1969 album Skylarking, which features songs such as Just Say Who? and Love Of A Woman, he has never been afraid to experiment.
His decision to move to England brought him a whole new set of fans in the 1980s and 1990s. Inspired by his work with King Tubby and Prince Jammy, he was asked to collaborate with the Bristol-based trip hop group Massive Attack.
And he continues to release new music. He featured on the All-Stars 2006 album Radiodread, and his latest release was a collaboration with Sly and Robbie, the Mad Professor and drum and bass artists Mafia and Fluxy.
Expect a fat backing band and a whole load of twisted versions from his best-known works.
But, above all, expect a couple of hours of his soaring, trademark vocals, which have lost none of the power and range that have helped him sell more than 500,000 records.

* Horace Andy plays the Jazz Café on April 10 at 7pm. £20 adv.
