Johnny Flynn is set to play at Camden Crawl
Yes, it really will be good to see Johnny

PREVIEW: JOHNNY FLYNN
Camden Crawl

I’LL fess up. The first reason I decided to run this preview was because I saw a picture of Johnny Flynn and my mind wandered.
Is that so bad? Look at the man and tell me that I’m wrong.
But after giving his myspace page a whirl – www.myspace.com/
johnnyflynn – I was well and truly smitten.
The man’s a god with a guitar and a harmonica. And he’s not bad looking either – sorry I think I might have mentioned that already.
But getting back to the music: folksy, funny, energetic and sincere, everything you wouldn’t expect from a Shakespearian actor – don’t worry, I won’t hold your luvviness against you Johnny.
Leftovers is an ode to eating sardines and bacon rind – again, I’m keeping an open mind – while The Box shows a similar enthusiasm for bins.
Johnny’s a trained Shakespearian actor who regularly travels the world reciting Richard III and romancing Juliet when he’s not singing about bins.
And, showing a remarkably educated palate for a man who forages for food, he likes custard cream biscuits.
His musical taste is even more sophisticated, lurching from Langhorne Slim to The Pixies, although a line must be drawn at his choice of actors: Dolf Lundgren!
Eyeless in Holloway, another barn-dancing smash ’n’ grab on his myspace, is great. “Filled his boots and tipped his hat,” he sings before the fiddle and harmonica do their bit. Then the tubthumper jumps in to drive an a cappella verse. Genius! I defy you not to dance.
And look, he’s bagged himself a support slot on tour with one of the year’s most heavily tipped stars, the stunning Laura Marling.
After whizzing around the country with Jack Penate last year, I’m sure the bus will smell nicer.

* Johnny Flynn will be playing at the Camden Crawl which takes place on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19.
