The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS
Published: 13 March 2008

Grooves

IT’S coming up to that time of year when Camden braces itself for an annual onslaught: the Camden Crawl.
The Crawl has turned out some amazing gigs, including Graham Coxon (three years ago), Amy Winehouse (last year) and Laura Marling (also last year). And of course it’s also about the bands and acts you haven’t heard of.
But is this year’s line-up any good, and is it a good thing that for the first time in the “festival’s” history it’s being run over a Friday and Saturday? The second question is not easy to answer at this stage: it’s a wait and see.
Of course, part of the fun of the fair in past years has been the way the Crawl takes over the normal working week, offering a surreal break from the office.
And there have been moans from venue owners that they will miss out on the cash bonanza the Crawl brings. Where they would usually have mass crowds twice in one week – during the festival and again on the weekend – now it will just be the once, and probably a lot of their normal weekend punters will stay away.
However, the Crawl could go with more of a bang because it’s on a weekend.
But on to the line-up. So far no big names announced – they’re usually unveiled on the night – but the majority of the underdogs announced promise good things, including Ida Maria (see preview). And look: I got through an entire piece without mentioning the queues. Almost.
