The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS

Grooves

BAD luck for anyone planning to buy a ticket to see Supergrass at the Roundhouse next week – apparently it’s sold out.
Although Paul Weller was the headliner of Sunday evening’s homeless charity gig, Consequences Live, Supergrass showed what they can do at the Roundhouse with a set list of just six songs. Imagine what they will do with 15!
The place rocked. Anyone sensibly planning to get to their beds as the Oxford trio stepped on at 10 were soon persuaded to live recklessly and stay. Beer flying, the moshpit revellers bounced around like they were teenagers again – although at nearly £50 a ticket, short-pocketed teens were a bit thin on the ground.
But it was for a good cause and I would welcome something similar again.
Because it was organised by Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey and his wife Pearl Lowe, the line-up of mates and indie stalwarts was somewhat predictable, although not unwelcome! But maybe next time get a girl band in? After all, pop cleared the boards at this year’s Brits and is the hot sound of the moment.
And a bit of totty might calm down the lads, who got very hot under the collar when 70s icon Weller stepped out. Fights broke out across the dancefloor as the Jam man did his thing – bringing out the worst in beshirted men reliving their youth.
