?Hall given £0.5m gift
JOHN Gilhooly, director of Wigmore Hall, has announced that its commissioning scheme is to be underpinned by a gift of £500,000, donated by André Hoffmann, grandson of the conductor and philanthropist Paul Sacher.
This will enable more than 50 new works – by 50 different composers – up until 2014.
“This generous gift ensures that Wigmore Hall will maintain its position as a leading venue for new music,” said Mr Gilhooly.
“We have secured partners – venues and festivals worldwide – so that any new work will receive several international performances, following a Wigmore Hall world premiere.”
Mr Gilhooly also announced that Luke Bedford will act as the Hall’s first-ever Composer-in-Residence from 2009.
