The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS

A secret Super gig? How very groovy is that!

INTERVIEW
SIMON SINGLETON
Pure Groove Records

PURE Groove Records in Holloway Road is not just my namesake – which is pretty groovy in itself – but it also played host to a spectacular private party on Saturday.
The Diamond Hoo Ha Men – better known to you and I as Supergrass – did a show at the record shop performing under the name of their forthcoming single.
Manager extraordinaire Simon Singleton told Grooves the secret gig came about after a few words from him in the ear of their marketing team. He said it was so successful people were watching the Britpop duo – whittled down from three while Mick Quinn recovers from a fall – through the windows.
Running through oldies including Lenny and Caught By the Fuzz before moving on to newer material, Gaz Coombes (pictured) and Danny Goffey then did a storming guitar-screeching cover of Michael Jackson’s Beat It.
“It was amazing,” Simon said of the show.
In admirable style, Simon was adamant fans should have as much chance of seeing the show as press, and insisted on a first-come-first-served entry system.
The record shop, which specialises in indie and dance, is no stranger to secret gigs, having recently seen Kate Nash, Maximo Park and Mystery Jets play the 50-capacity shop – but, according to Simon, this was its biggest act to date.
