The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS
Published: 25 October 2007

I WASN’T the only one looking awkward at the front all right, especially when Juliette Lewis came into the crowd and started groping us, but I don’t think people hated that as much as they pretended to.
Seeing Patti Smith, Juliette Lewis of the Licks, and Shingai Shinowa of the Noisettes, all on the same line-up, was a thrill.
Getting flown out to see them in Nashville, performing for the Birthday Jack Daniel’s Set on the grounds of their whiskey distillery in Lynchberg, Tennessee, wasn’t bad either.
Who’s gonna bitch about a load of free stuff? Nobody silly, that’s why they do it.
But that doesn’t mean you have to say it’s great if it’s not – and it was.
And while the gig on Barbeque Hill was a unique experience, actually interviewing Patti Smith, who’s now my idol, was jawdropping. I know, I know, everyone thinks she’s old hat, some kid from the 60s who’s outstayed her welcome, but she’s isn’t trying to be anything. She’s made her mark, and now she just wants to make a difference.
Juliette Lewis had an impressive stage presence, while Shingai has an amazing set of lungs – she strikes me as an artist who should go it alone – how many people actually know her band or its songs?
This is the third year Jack Daniel’s has thrown a birthday bash for the man himself, who would be 157 years old this year, if he hadn’t gone and kicked a safe and died in 1911. As Patti herself said, ‘Happy birthday Jack’.
