Pine packs ’em in
REVIEW - CULTURES OF RESISTANCE

THE Union Chapel promised great things last week with a line-up to please left-leaning music lovers of all persuasions.
But it was headliner Courtney Pine who pulled in the punters to The Cultures of Resistance night at the Islington church.
Starting with a jazzed up version of Sunny, Pine and his band brought instant ease after the intensity of veteran saxophonist Gilad Atzmon’s set.
Islingtonian Pine’s childlike energy rubbed off on the audience ensuring that a long night of uncomfortable seating concluded with the audience shimmying between the pews.
Despite his best efforts it was an achievement that hip hop hero Rodney P missed out on.
After an awkward beginning, the mainly greying audience warmed to the south London rapper and his forthright lyrics proved the surprise hit they deserved.
Pianist and singer Sam Beste and his band may have been pitch perfect but their set was disappointingly bland compared to the heavyweights who came after. |
