The Review - Music - grooves with SIMON WROE

Demo of the Week
Deaf Stereo

BEING deaf in the music industry is apparently very cool. There’s Def Jam, Def Jux, and Mos Def. Deaf is the new black.
Deaf Stereo are the latest addition to this dubious roster. This Camden Town five-piece play ‘death disco’, electro-rock type compositions in the style of New York bands like the Rapture and Lcd soundsystem.
It’s angular guitar riffs and dancey ESG drums, punctuated by funky synth tweaks.
But Deaf Stereo have made the sound their own by virtue of their Britishness. The singing has a Primal Scream swagger and, more than anything, the apocalyptic choruses of the tracks House on Fire and Blackness Falls are straight up Brit-rock anthem stuff.
Deaf Stereo play at the Kill All Hippies Christmas Party at Islington Academy, Friday December 8.

• If you want your demo reviewed, please send it in to Grooves, 40 Camden Road, London NW1 9DR.
