The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir
NOT police. Not Scottish. Not gospel. Not really a choir. You wonder how some bands get their names.
I imagine it’s like that moment at the start of a pub quiz when you and your pals are asked to put down a team name. The struggle is on to come up with something original but nobody can think of anything.
By the picture round, you are wondering why you called yourself Mylene Klass’s Knickers. It’s same with band names. Band members meet in the clubhouse. Hours of discussions and suggestions – and you end up being called something silly like Bananarama. Or Buck’s Fizz. Or The Beatles. Or The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir. However the latter and least famous got their curious name, they play great music.
Bet You Never Thought It Would Be Like This is one of the best new songs I have heard this year, a beautiful serve of boy-girl lo-fi with echoes of early Belle and Sebastian.
“Grab something good and hold on because the world’s gone wrong” might not be the cheeriest lyrics but the melancholy nature of the tune would only be lost on the shallowest of listeners. Its horn and organ breaks are worthy of Procol Harem arguments over ownership.
Other songs on the demos doing the round include She Just Wants To Move and Ellen’s Telling Me What I Want To Hear, two swinging slices of Americana. When you hear a band with a silly name get big in the next year, you won’t remember that you read about them here first. But you did.
