Chamillionaire
Cham aims to be a real hip hop ‘player’

PREVIEW: CHAMILLIONAIRE
Forum

CHAMILLION is so far known in the UK for his number two hit Ridin’ (“tryin’ to catch me ridin’ dirty”).
But he’s been plugging away in the states for years, and before he broke out as a successful solo artist he was earning his dinner money as a key member of Swisha House mixmasters.
It was while doing this that he earned the moniker ‘mixtape messiah’.
His debut self-titled album came out last year on his own record label Chamilitia, but he’s geared up to release his second in 2007 on Universal and has recruited nothing but the best producing wise.
Showing slightly dubious aspirations, Cham (pronounced with a K) said the Beat Bullies’ production “can take it to the strip clubs, the streets and to the radio”.
Admittedly his subject matter hasn’t up until now fallen far from the Ghetto tree – blinging, pimping, ‘G’s’, etc – but his skill is head and shoulders above the rest.
A collaboration with UK hip hop star Sway, on his Myspace page, attests to Cham’s credentials as a rising act in this country, while American comedian Weird Al Yankovic’s copy of his hit Ridin’ – White and Nerdy, also on Myspace – is truly funny. And regarded by Cham as a compliment.
His Forum gig, rescheduled from the 16 of this month, should be his chance to establish himself over here.
And if he moves away from an immaturity in his material to more innovative territory, he could actually be a real ‘player’ in the game of hip hop, and not just the Texan strip joints.
