OL’ caterpillar brows is back – and his fans haven’t changed much either.
Although he may have calmed down a bit since the heady Britpop days of the ’90s – he’s sold Supernova Heights at least – his fans still know how to do the rowdy rabble act whenever a Gallagher brother is in their midst.
I was first introduced to the devotion Liam and Noel inspire when I watched Oasis at Earl’s Court. When the blokes in the audience caught sight of Liam prior to the show, the bloodthirsty chanting began. The poor support band couldn’t compete with “we want Liam” repeated again and again, beer cans in hand.
But just as their idols haven’t really grown up, neither have they. When Noel did a solo show at Koko a couple of weeks ago, the Holloways were baptised in beer as a friendly way of telling them to hurry up and let the show proper begin, while Dirty Pretty Things fared little better – they wanted caterpillar brows.
And if you’re one of the lucky ones who bought a ticket to next week’s acoustic gig at the Union Chapel in Angel, then you’ll get him too.
He may be an arrogant so and so (remember him calling Michael Hutchence a “has been” at the ’96 Brits?), but he’s the greatest living rock and roll personality and songwriter of his generation, and that’s according to legendary Beatles producer George Martin.
Other acts taking part in the gigs, which are for the learning disability charity Mencap, include The Kooks, Paolo Nuttini, The Fratellis, Lily Allen and James Morrison.
Although most of the gigs have sold out there are a few tickets left.
