Herbie’s here for the London Jazz Festival

Roundhouse
IT hasn’t taken long for the newly refurbished Roundhouse to re-establish itself as one of London’s foremost music venues.
Not only have The Who and James Brown been recent visitors, the former train shed in Chalk Farm Road is now playing a major role in the London Jazz Festival, hosting a series of concerts and events including an appearance by the legendary pianist Herbie Hancock.
He performs at the Roundhouse on November 11 and having launched himself as a major part of Miles Davis’s second great quintet from 1963, Hancock, a pioneer of the fusion of jazz with funk, is the elder statesman here.
He finds himself alongside some of the world’s outstanding musicians including percussionist Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Nathan East and the young guitarist from Benin, Lionel Loueke – a quartet he has been touring with since 2005.

And although not officially connected with the festival itself, the venue is hosting a masterclass in Latin jazz and salsa with Oscar Hernandez and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra on November 14.
The event presents the opportunity for eager musicians and singers between the ages of 11 and 25 to get involved in the orchestra through workshops and performance. Musicians are advised to bring their own instruments although percussion will be available.
The event begins at 4.30pm and places should be booked on the day.
