Bill Wyman
Bill’s Rythm Kings drop into Jazz Café

INTERVIEW: BILL WYMAN
by Dan Carrier

PLAYING to sell-out stadium crowds with the best-known rock ’n’ roll band in the world kept Bill Wyman busy for 30 years.

But while Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the rest of his former Rolling Stones colleagues still traipse from continent to continent filling venues with fans desperate for their back-catalogue, Bill is happy to leave them to it.
Instead, his band, the Rhythm Kings are dropping into the Jazz Café in Camden Town to play their eclectic bag of rhythm and blues, boogie woogie, jazz and soul.
“It reached the point with the Stones where I had done it all. I woke up and thought: I don’t want to be playing this again,” he told Grooves.
While there was no souring of relations with the band when he announced he was hanging up his bass, the shine had rubbed off being a Stone for him. “I wanted to try other things,” he says.
Bill put his instrument away and didn’t touch it for two years.
He set about pursuing photography, and a recent exhibition in California was so successful it has now been transferred to Holland.
Due an airing in London next year, it includes snaps of the Stones from the start up to his final days with them.
“We were always being photographed as a band but my pictures were where no one else had access – pictures in dressing rooms, on tour buses, on planes or away from music, at home,” Bill says.
“They have a natural feel to them, much more so than these posed-up photographs.”
But the musician inside began to re-emerge, so he booked some studio time and called up a few friends, and a compilation album was born, as were the Rhythm Kings.
And he is looking forward to bringing his music to the Jazz Café.
He adds: “Camden has that reputation for musicians as a place where you will be appreciated.”
