Go fly with the Southend maestro

PREVIEW - GET CAPE. WEAR CAPE. FLY
Islington Academy
by Rory Carroll

SOUTHEND is famous for many things – boy racers, the white mini-skirt, and an abundance of fish and chip shops – but music has never featured quite so prominently.

Fortunately, its native son Sam Duckworth and his music project Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, are set to ring in the changes and announce Southend as England’s new music capital.
Well, almost. It has been a rollercoaster year for Duckworth, finding himself catapulted from sleeping on the floors of complete strangers, to gaining cult status and massive credibility amongst his musical peers – and when you consider that he is only 20, this makes his success all the more astounding.
His music eclectically combines the vocal style of the much berated ‘emo’ genre with softer folk-inspired guitar work, set to a backdrop of electronic beats. By all accounts this combination should be nothing but unpleasant to the ear – but it is not, which makes the intimate show at the Islington Academy a must see.
Duckworth is indeed a rare talent, who despite his age has succeeded in producing an album with remarkably mature lyrics infused with perceptive political messages – all of which add credence to the Billy Bragg comparisons.
