The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS
Published: 6 September 2007

GOD there’s no end of things to shout about here in Camden. First it was the bid to ‘save’ Stables Market which has thousands of online signatures and now this: A Brit Award for Madness.
Yes, that’s right the Baggy Trousered ones have never been given a Brit. Not that they care probably but more than 250 folks have already added their names to the petition calling for the 80s Camden band to be recognised on the stage of Brit.
It is surprising that Suggs et al have never been given some kind of industry slap on the back, considering they’re one of Britain’s most popular bands with a huge following abroad. Everybody knows House of Fun and It Must Be Love, right?
One blogger on the online petition, called Fred from France, said: “Madness deserve a Brit Award because of the good songs they wrote, the unique universe they built they talk about important things, they make us dance...”
Another, Allison, wrote: “They are legends. Give ’em knighthoods, never mind a Brit Award!”
And as if that wasn’t enough, it should be remembered they also hold the record for the most weeks spent by a group in the singles chart in the 80s.
So let’s hear it for the 2 tone ska band from Camden Town who began life in their spiritual home, the Dublin Castle in Parkway.
Give them a Brit, guys. To join the campaign go to www.madnessbritaward.co.uk
