Niyi’s sense of humour will see him go far
Niyi creates a buzz at Barfly

REVIEW: NIYI
Barfly

WALKING around the Barfly before his gig, club kid Niyi was already turning heads.
Attracting attention is to be expected though, if your outfit of choice happens to be Avirex-style jacket, fluorescent yellow geek glasses and a full-size Red Indian headdress.
Makes a change from skinny jeans, leather jacket and converse doesn’t it?
In the glorious tradition of wearing clothes which cause confused and annoyed looks from previous generations, nu-raver Niyi is certainly carrying the torch with an individuality that was lacking when rave music first came around.
Not that Niyi’s cartoonish electro grime set is just pure theatrics.
His inspired paean to poached eggs, for instance, is really quite catchy. And when he starts crooning halfway through Volume Control it is hard to not to have a smile on your face.
So for all the dressing up it is obvious that Niyi really means it. Dedicating one song “to those who didn’t believe,” and later jumping into the crowd to greet fellow grime/ravers Man Like Me, you can tell Niyi has big plans for his music. And rightly so. Just like Man Like Me, Niyi combines a freshness and sense of humour as well as an ear for a tune that should see him go on to bigger things.
He definitely has the talent to do it – while Camden Town is not a notable hotbed of nu-rave activity, Niyi easily gets even the most bemused members of the crowd moving.
