The Review - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS

Demo of the Week

RESOLUTE

I MET bass guitarist Chris Greve in a pub once. He told me a long joke about a man who fell out of love with tractors when he realised how much they cost to buy. It took more than five minutes to tell, probably close to ten.
In the end, the man puts out a random fire by swallowing smoke and flames and, for the heavily engineered punchline, is labelled an ‘ex-tractor fan’.
He wasted five minutes of my life that night. All for a dumb pun.
Thankfully his band’s music is a better way to spend five minutes or so.
Full of Skunk Anansie-sh guitar-and-girl screaming, Resolute pull few punches with epic rollercoasters to rawck out to. There have been a few changes to the line-up but Christelle Kelley still leads them out, axe in hand and delivering distinctive vocals strong enough to set them apart from the other Garbage-alikes.
As a band, they call their music “energising hard rock”. Whatever.
Tunes like Apathy and Craving are the musical Lucozade they are talking about, soaring big dippers with crashing crescendos that hit all the right rock buttons.
Resolute – tough name, rubbish jokes – are down to play the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town on October 6.
It should be well worth a visit to hear it come together live.
