The Review - Classical Music with JOEL TAYLOR

Pianist is set to dazzle

PREVIEW
St Martin-in-the-fields

ST Martin-in-the-Fields is hosting a couple of concerts this week that are different from its normal programme as on Tuesday the lunchtime concert sees performances of songs from popular musicals.
So we have ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire?’ and ‘Well Did you Evah?’ from Cole Porter’s High Society, ‘I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right out of may Hair’, from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, alongside other popular songs such as A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.
And at the tea concert on Wednesday flautist Gareth McLearnon and marimba player Katy Elman will perform a selection of works by Piazolla, Bach/Gounod, Zivkovic along side traditional Celtic melodies.
The church, however, is continuing its series championing young pianists from across the world. On Bank Holiday Monday young Spanish piano player Maria Angel Garcia Soria (pictured) is performing a lunchtime programme that includes Bach’s Prelude and Fugue No 24 in B Minor (book II), Chopin’s Scherzo No 1 in B minor and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No 12 in C sharp minor.
Having been accepted in a Conservatoire at the age of seven, she won a scholarship to Trinity at the age of 19 and clearly possesses a great deal of technical skill and might be worth keeping an eye on.
