The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS
Published: 17 May 2007

‘WHAT’S red and has two legs? Half a dog.’ That was the family newspaper-friendly joke that prompted Camden singer Ny to burst into a fit of… well, she laughed a bit, alright. Asking her to giggle as I snapped away by the flowerstand at the corner of Parkway and Camden High Street, I was forced into using my limited array of terrible jokes. (When is a door not a door? When it’s ajar).
Ny, known as Nyomi Gray to her mother, is a tiny girl from Kentish Town with big plans. Having already released one mixtape two years ago – which made significant ripples in and around London – her second mixtape is certain to make the wave needed to boost her into the money-making chart arena. With production from people like Wiley (a founding member of chart-successes Roll Deep, and previously of Pay As You Go MCs), and her own appearances on albums by Sway and The Streets, Ny has already been recognised in a wider circle. She should be able to break into chart-success when she finally settles on a label (“if the best deal comes along, but I’m not going to settle for second best”), and releases her first album.
Here’s hoping Ny, the most soulful lady of Grime there is, can recreate and even better the success of her teenage hero and near neighbour Ms Dynamite, who she even shared a manger with in the early days. There’s a steely determination to Ny that somehow tells me she will.
