NEWS: 2007/08 SEASON
Wigmore hall

A RUSSIAN festival co-ordinated by Steven Isserlis and a fundraising recital by Bryn Terfel are just a couple of the highlights of the Wigmore Hall’s 2007/ 08 seasons just announced.
The season will feature in total 230 concerts, 30 more than in 2006/07 and will be presented by the hall itself, rather than bringing in outside promoters.
Other highlights include the performance of three song cycles sung by the English tenor Mark Padmore over the course of five days and the complete songs of Poulenc will be performed in a series of concerts overseen by Malcolm Martineau, one of the world’s leading accompanists.
The celebrated American mezzo-soprano Susan Graham will be appearing for a performance of French song and Sarah Connolly, the leading English mezzo-soprano, will be joining the Gabrieli Consort for a production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, conducted by Paul McCreesh.
A highlight that is bound to get attention will be the return of the exciting 32-year-old violinist Maxim Vengerov, who will be taking part in the series of Russian-themed concerts.
Dates are still unavailable but it looks to be a fascinating programme.
And the Marylebone concert hall is in chipper mood at the moment, having secured its lease, guaranteeing its long-term future, and it is boasting a 300 per cent increase in the number of first-time visitors to the hall.
“Wigmore Hall is now 106 years old and is an institution of international renown,” said director John Gilhooly.
He added: “We know that its reputation and audiences can never be taken for granted. In the crowded and competitive environment of London’s music scene, a small organisation like Wigmore Hall has to work constantly to maintain and develop its position.”
So, keep an eager eye open for more details as they become available.
