The Girl from Mars is out of this world

PREVIEW: CHARLOTTE HATHERLEY
Islington Academy
by Rory Carroll

ASH’S former guitarist and resident Girl from Mars has done rather well for herself.
Now living in Islington and no longer resigned to writing B-sides for Ash singles, Charlotte Hatherley has taken bold steps towards establishing herself as a commanding solo artist.

In the midst of a UK tour taking in Ireland before starting in Glasgow and working her way down the country, her final leg is at the Islington Academy next Tuesday.
Her 2005 debut solo effort Grey Will Fade – with its notable singles Summer and Bastardo – covered a wide range of topics including one-night stands, relationships, and the most heinous of all crimes – guitar theft.
With a style that places her somewhere between Graham Coxon and Chrissie Hynde, Hatherley has proved that she is not only a talented singer/songwriter, but that there is definitely life after big bands.
Support act Shuffle – also from Islington – are well worth getting to the Angel venue early for. They struck up a friendship with Hatherley after her sister Beatrice joined the group.
Diesel-U-Music Leftfield winners in 2005 – Mylo is another notable winner of the award – songwriter Monica Yam is quick to point out that the band “won the gig on our own merits”.
Having toured with the Mighty Roars last year, and been touted by just about every radio station functioning – could they outshine the headliner? Possible.
