The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS

The Weapons

A HIGH-stakes competition has been hit by controversy after an ejected band cried foul on their web-blog.

The Weapons, a four-month-old indie band from Islington, who describe themselves as “lads’ music,” accused The Cedar Rooms bar in Upper Street of treating them unfairly.
They say their fans were not all given voting slips – and as a result they lost out on a trip to Benicassim.
But owner of the Cedar Rooms Jack Power – nephew of music venue magnate Vince Power – called the band and their fans animals, and blamed them for flooding his upstairs bar.
He said: “The competition is completely fair. I personally liked that band, I wished they’d got through, but they were numbskulls who smashed up the venue – that’s not rock ’n’ roll.”
Without wading into a he-said she-said row, let me just say I like the band. Especially their track Don’t Let Me Down, which can be heard at www.myspace.com/theweaponsuk. Although it’s rough and scratchy, it demonstrates just how much promise they have.
Unsigned bands, send demos in to Demo of the Week, 40 Camden Road, London, NW1 9DR, or email an online link to grooves@camdennewjournal.co.uk.
