String players always wanted

NEWS: LONDON MEDICAL ORCHESTRA

I AM pleased to say following my appeal for information from amateur music groups, I have received a healthy response so we start off things with the London Medical Orchestra (LMO).
There are few ensembles that have quite the heritage of the LMO, having been conducted by luminaries including Sir Colin Davis, Norman Del Mar and Bernard Keefe and vice presidents have included Jacqueline du Pré.
It was founded in 1954 by refugee doctors and dentists from Eastern Europe and originally conducted by Dr Hans Ucko and led by Dr J Bachner. And in 1964 it combined with the Three Hospitals Orchestra in 1964.
Every year it puts on three concerts, the next being on March 25 at St Giles Cripplegate, and the repertoire includes works by Beethoven, Sibelius, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Rossini, Elgar and Vaughan Williams.
I am told that experienced “and enthusiastic” string players are always welcome and “you don’t have to be medical”.
Practices are weekly and take place on Tuesdays at 7.30pm at the Highbury Roundhouse, in Ronalds Road, N5.
So if you want to get more information and take part contact Adrian Garfoot on 01553 774 586, see the website www.lmo.org.uk or email londedorc2 @aol.com
And to all the other amateur ensembles out there who are eager to recruit new members please email me all the relevant details.
