Matt Willis
How Matt busted out of the jungle

INTERVIEW: MATT WILLIS

MATT Willis, one third of defunct pop group Busted and now a solo act, won I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here last year.
He spoke to me from his girlfriend’s flat in Highgate. Matt’s debut album Don’t Let It Go To Waste came out last year. He plays Shepherd’s Bush Empire on February 21.

CC: When were you last in Camden?
MW: I’m always in Camden, I live in Crouch End so I’m there all the time. The last gig I went to was to see my flatmate’s band Johnny Panic at the Proud Gallery.
The last time I was in Camden was when I had a little ‘welcome back from the jungle’ party at the Lock Tavern pub in Chalk Farm.

CC: Are you sick of talking about the jungle?
MW: Not really, it’s still fresh in my mind. In three months time I might be.

CC: I was a massive Jason Donovan fan as a kid, tell me about him.
MW: He’s slightly crazy and mad – it’s not put on, I think he’s a bit mental. It’s good entertainment.

CC: Will you do more reality TV?
MW: That’s me done, I got offered all those other shows but I’d never do them – Celebrity is the coolest one. The rest of them it’s just you being a kn*b. I can’t watch this year’s Celebrity Big Brother, I can’t stand the Goodys.

CC: You’ve got more than 30,000 Myspace fans.
MW:
Have I? Well, I was in a band called Busted and some have come from that I think, and I think I do good music.

CC: Your album has been described as ‘stadium pop’.
MW: Yeah it’s quite ballsy, out there pop music. It’s an honest album.
You’re not putting yourself out there talking about fancying your schoolteacher, but this is about what’s happened to me since I’ve left Busted.
People think me and Charlie [Simpson, Busted frontman] hate each other – it got blown out of proportion, I just got p**sed off with a few things he said. I’m a big Fightstar fan.

CC: Where do you go out in Highgate?
MW: I go to the Flask, but I go to the Red Sun and Lion, it’s the best pub ever. On Sundays this woman comes out and sings songs.
I might go tonight in fact. I also like Dim T – quite a new discovery. They do Dim Sum.
