Patrols take youths off streets in controversial pilot scheme
ELEVEN children found on the streets at night have been taken into police protection in a controversial Home Office operation aimed at cutting youth gang crime.
Patrols ran all weekend across the borough, with police escorting vulnerable children home to their parents or to a centre where council social workers assessed their situation.
Nearly half the children placed under police protection were already known to social services, according to police, who said crime had been cut by the initiative, called Operation Staysafe.
“The word has got round that we are out there and burglaries have fallen sharply,” said patrol leader Sgt Foster Percil.
But the scheme has been questioned by youth civil rights activists. Camden Youth Council leader Axel Landin said: “Protecting young people and tackling crime are two separate issues – it could become a curfew for teenagers.”
Council crime chief Councillor James King said: “The initiative is targeted at those who are at risk, and will not prevent older teenagers from enjoying a night out.” > Full Story |
