West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 March 2008

Need for a new school in the south

I REALLY must protest at the inaccuracies in Richard Osley’s front-page report (Education chief pledges funds for new school, March 14) where he writes of a government investigation of “Camden Council’s decision to blow a £200 million grant on a new academy school in St John’s Wood, instead of finding somewhere suitable south of the Euston Road”.
In fact the new academy, backed by University College London, is intended to cost only £25 million, not £200 million.
It is also clear that the government is now pledged to a new school south of the Euston Road in addition to the new academy in the north west of the borough, not instead of it.
Far from considering the money intended for the Adelaide Road academy “blown”, the secretary of state Ed Balls says, in an announcement dated February 29, that the academy, for which funding has now been released “would provide much needed new places in the north west of the borough”.
The government’s new pledge to provide another new secondary school south of the Euston Road as well follows on the insistence last year by Councillor John Bryant, the Liberal Democrat executive member for children schools and families on Camden Council, that Camden must continue to pursue every possibility for providing a new school in the south. I hope the government will not now try to wriggle out of its new commitment by claiming that no site can be found after all, or that there are not enough children in the area to make the school necessary.
