West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 March 2008

So where are all these pubs open until the ‘wee’ hours?

IN his letter Dominic Pinto (In the wee hours, March 7) complains about “vastly extended pubs, clubs and hours”.
Am I the only person to notice that pub hours have not been extended?
I know that it is now possible for them to apply for longer opening hours, and many have applied, but only a tiny number have received an extended licence.
And even then it is usually only to midnight, with an even smaller number being allowed to stay open until 1am; …and it really is a tiny number.
I think you could count them on one hand.
So what are this correspondent, and all the other people who bang on about “24 hour licensing”, talking about?
I know that “clubs” are open until the wee hours, but they always were even before the change in the law.
As far as I see it, the change in the licensing law has not brought about any change at all in the opening hours of licensed establishment.
Perhaps someone who knows better than me could tell me where all these pubs are which are apparently open until the early hours?
