Trees go in anti-terror measure
A MULTI-million pound redevelopment of Whitehall has been criticised by environment groups.
The £25 million Whitehall Streetscape project includes the removal of 12 trees to make way for concrete anti-terrorism barriers.
The 60-year-old trees, a combination of London Plane and Oak, are to be axed and replaced with 10-year-old trees.
Conservative environment spokesman Peter Ainsworth said he was unhappy at the loss of the trees, which he said made the environment a victim of the War on Terror.
He added: “I think it’s hugely depressing.”
But the council¹s director of transport Martin Low said: “The £25m Whitehall Streetscape Project has been carefully designed to create a far more spacious and better integrated street layout. |
