West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 23 March 2007

Charge hypocrisy

• I HAVE been following with interest the debate (If one can call it that) in the national and local press regarding the congestion charge.
None of us want to pay extra taxes so it is easy to attack Ken Livingstone, but one looks in vain for suggested alternatives by his critics to cope with what is a real problem.
Both Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea councils make large profits from parking charges. If you remember this was not the claimed aim when they were first introduced.
It is also a fact that these boroughs do not control the congestion charge, but if they are really concerned about their citizens why not reduce their parking fees to help people cope with the congestion charge?
