Leap into the unknown for stage-diving Florence

REVIEW - FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE
Proud

WHEN I first saw Florence Welch, she was an incidental accompaniment to Jonny Borrell’s solo show at the old Proud Galleries nearly two years ago.
But even then, in a whispy white dress, long red hair and shock of a voice, she ripped the spotlight from the Razorlight frontman.
Last week was a different story. Florence already owned the spotlight.
The stage was decked out in flowers and gold birdcages, a huge gold harp dominated one side and Proud was busier than I’d ever seen it on a Thursday night.
The cool kids – parachuted into Camden after Queens of Noize moved their trendy Soho Smash & Grab night from Punk – wore their bizarre outfits with style and clamoured to get to the front. And Florence looked like she loved every second of it.
Normally if you tried to dive into a Proud audience you’d be lucky not to fall flat on your face. But these guys were there for her – twice.
The show wasn’t massively different from previous ones, but the crowd was the perfect fit.
Moving from dark, deathly folk to dirty blues, the set included Kiss With a Fist, Girl With One Eye and Dog Days, ending with a worthy rendition of Candi Staton’s You’ve got the Love.
