The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB

Grooves

A WARY but overawed friend recently found himself standing next to the DJ he most admired. “Why didn’t you speak to him,” I asked. “Never meet your heroes,” he replied.
His fear of disappointment makes sense, but is that really how to go about life? If you worried that Ian Brown couldn’t sing live, you’d never have gone to see the Stone Roses live and been proved right. What about Bob Dylan, who’s announced he’s playing at the Roundhouse on April 26? Should we avoid the gig in case his voice is shaky and he sounds old? It is and he will. I say go, expect the worst and enjoy their faults. It’s what made them what they are.

* IF you’re still umming and ahhing over whether or not to buy a Camden Crawl ticket, these latest additions should push you over the edge: US garage pop trio The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have got my friends excited, time for some acid house raving with 808 State, and The Maccabees, who have recently convinced me of their worth with their new single, No Kind Words. Also confirmed are Scottish hobbits The View, Dinosaur Pile-Up and Little Boots and Frankmusic, who I forgot to mention last time.

*(I CHOSE not to go see Sparks at the Forum the other night – I don’t think I’ll ever like them. But who am I to take issue with our expert reviewer Jonathan Simpson, who takes a very different view? See his review online.

* ONE of my favourite haunts, The Old Queen’s Head in Essex Road, has just lost a battle to open until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. I’ve always thought nights there ended too early. Apparently the neighbours want to be able to sleep or something.
