The Review - CLASSICAL & JAZZ - with TONY KIELY
Published: 27 November 2008

Something’s cooking in Ronnie’s kitchen

PREVIEW: KAI'S CATS
The Cooker (at Ronnie Scott's)

THE quality of jazz performed at Ronnie Scott’s in undeniable, but in these times of financial strife, the price on the door is probably a little prohibitive.
But fear not – for the price of a bargain-bin Miles Best-of (£5, to be precise) you can now gain entry to the spiritual home of London jazz every Thursday night.
The Cooker, a weekly session that kicks off at 10.30pm and runs till around 1am, serves up a tasty selection of acoustic sets with everything from jazz, funk, swing and Afrobeat thrown in the mix.
Since the night launched in the Upstairs Bar back in August, it has developed a healthy following, with the monthly rotation of the headline acts – featuring
The Filthy Six, Atila, Kelly Dickson’s Mamafeelgood Funkagenda and driving hard-bop from the Osian Roberts and Steve Fishwick Quintet – all going down a storm with audiences.
Next up in the guest slot are Kai’s Cats. Led by American songstress Kai Hoffman and with arrangements by pianist Simon Whiteside, the Cats’ retro jump-jive band has a line-up including some of London’s hottest jazz players.
At £5, The Cooker is the perfect night out for the dedicated jazz fiend and the saxually curious alike.
The Cooker takes place every Thursday at Ronnie Scott’s,
47 Frith Street, W1.
