Concerts celebrating Vaughan Williams’ genius

PREVIEW: HIGHGATE CHORAL SOCIETY

All Hallows Church

The Highgate Choral Society will be performing on Saturday at 7.30pm at All Hallows’ Church in Savernake Road, Gospel Oak, featuring acclaimed soloists Anna Lees (soprano) and Mark Stone (baritone).
Building on the growing interest in the genius of Vaughan Williams, this timely concert will celebrate the richness of a work as magnificently dramatic and hauntingly beautiful as the sea itself.
With 180 choristers accompanied by the New London Orchestra, the Society’s performance of Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony promises to be a powerful spectacle.
The programme also includes Holst’s celestial triumph, Hymn of Jesus – a work dedicated by the composer to Vaughan Williams – and Hamish McCunn’s orchestral piece, The Land of the Mountain and the Flood.
Ronald Corp will give a free pre-performance talk at 6.50pm.
This year marks the start of Highgate Choral Society’s 130th birthday celebrations. Founded in 1878, it is one of the UK’s oldest and most successful choirs.
As part of its birthday celebrations, it will stage Elgar’s rarely-performed oratorio The Apostles at the Barbican in April 2009, followed by a tour to Estonia and Finland in May 2009.

The Highgate Choral Society perform at All Hallow’s Church on Saturday November 8 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10-£23 from the HCS box office, 07952 508234; at Les Aldrich’s Music Shop, 020 8883 5631; or at www.hcschoir.com
