The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS
Published: 29 November 2007

THE Mencap Little Noise Sessions appear to have gone off with much aplomb this year. I thought it would be a tough call to top last year’s Noel Gallagher moment (although he repeated his brief starring role at the Electric Proms this year – he must be getting bored). I was wrong.
It’s not often stadium bands do warm-up slots for anyone, letalone in a small venue like the Union Chapel for a relatively obscure act like Biffy Clyro (I said relatively, no angry emails, please, Clyro fans).
But that’s exactly what U2 – yes U2 – did when they trotted on to the stage as a secret guest for the Scottish rock band.
Obviously, Bono is best mates with Jo Whiley, the Little Noise compere – whose sister has learning difficulties – which is probably how it all came together I’m guessing.
But that leaves a glaring slot: who’s gonna turn up next year? Madonna? I vote for Michael Jackson, if that counts. Too unrealistic? Ok, what about Chuck Berry?
Another act who deserve some air time are the Minista Poets.
Up close and personal during an interview this week, the rapping Islington foursome were nothing but charm (apart from that joke about Steve McClaren, Daniel).
